The Basics of SCR. All 2010 & newer engines using select catalytic reduction (SCR) technology will be equipped with a tank holding liquid DEF. From the tank, DEF is routed to the exhaust system where it is injected into the hot exhaust gas stream. The DEF vaporizes forming ammonia and carbon dioxide.
